The ® symbol right after the word REALTOR® is a distinguished trademark that every REALTOR® needs to comply with. This is to let everyone know about the title difference between a “real estate agent” and a REALTOR®.
A REALTOR® adheres to a strict Code of Ethics which provides protection to the public and other real estate agents. In fact, according to NAR (National Association of Realtors), “The term REALTOR® is not only a trademark owned by NAR and protected by federal law, it's a valuable membership benefit that distinguishes members from other real estate licensees.”
So, the big question is: How do you become compliant? You won’t believe how a simple shortcut command can ensure this often neglected symbol is transmitted in each of your correspondence. Here’s how:
If you’re using a desktop computer, then you should be following these steps:
Now that you know how to insert that symbol. Let’s make sure that almost every program you’re using would reflect it any time you type the word “REALTOR”! Here’s how:
You can use any MS programs, on the video below, I’ve used MS Word.
And there you go, congratulations! This will make you compliant each and every time you type your hard-earned title. This also works with other programs after just setting it up with MS Word. Try it in Outlook, etc so you never miss it in any of your emails!
Oh, before you go, ALT + 0174 only works for desktop keyboards which has a dedicated numerical keypad and Num Lock keys. If you’re a laptop user, don’t you worry! There’s a simple way on how you can do it too! Just hit the following keys simultaneously: Right Arrow Key + Right ALT key + R.
If you're a MAC user, it's very simple, too! Just hold down the Option key and press R. You should be ready. How do you replicate it using MS Office programs? Here are the steps:
1. If you are using Microsoft Word for Mac, click "Word" near the top of the page and select "Preferences" from the drop-down menu.
2. Click "Autocorrect" on the top menu bar.
3. Make sure Symbol Characters is checked under Replace as you type.
4. Click OK
5. Moving forward, every time you type (R) in your Word documents; the program will automatically change it to the symbol.
For Apple or Android devices, follow these steps:
